A private home is seeking a Caregiver to care for an elderly person at their home in Etobicoke, Ontario. The caregiver must be capable of assisting one senior individual of whom is diagnosed with dementia. This is a permanent, full-time position of 40 hours/week with an hourly salary of $20.00 plus 4% vacation pay. Regular working hours will vary weekly but will be communicated in advance. Some evening, overnight and weekend work may be required. The language of work for the position is English.
The main responsibilities of the position include:
- Supervising and providing attentive and personal care for one elderly adult diagnosed with dementia within their residence;
- Overseeing and assisting with daily personal care routines such as grooming, dressing and managing incontinence symptoms;
- Accompanying and assisting with toileting, when needed;
- Adhering to prescribed bedtime routine ensuring skin care practices are strictly adhered to in order to prevent bed sores;
- Administering and supervising medication intake as prescribed by the family physician;
- Monitoring health conditions noting observable changes and reporting concerns promptly to family;
- Keeping accurate and up-to-date records such as a medication intake and bowel movement logs;
- Utilizing medical equipment to monitor the adult’s health condition such as regularly taking blood pressure;
- Providing companionship to the elderly person by engaging in conversations and storytelling;
- Organizing and engaging with client during social interaction activities such as table games, puzzles and colouring pages;
- Scheduling TV and Radio Programming time for client considering their preferences;
- Transferring and lifting the adult between locations within the home;
- Providing support and assistance with mobility aids and encouraging movement through short walks;
- Performing housekeeping tasks such as washing dishes after meals, changing bed linens, laundry, dusting, vacuuming and ensuring the space is clutter-free;
- Tending to the emotional well-being of the individual and supporting their decision making and independence;
- Preparing daily meals as established by the family’s meal schedule;
- Developing weekly meal plans with assistance from the family;
- Accompanying the individual to and from medical appointments as needed, and informing family members on care needs discussed and health status;
- Maintaining a safe, comfortable and clean environment;
- Communicating with the family members regularly; and
- Anticipating clients’ needs and customizing care to meet clients’ needs.
You must have the following qualifications:
- Completion of relevant training program, including Personal Support Worker (PSW) program, Palliative Care training or possession of a nursing degree;
- Experience working with geriatric clients who have been diagnosed with dementia
- Familiarity with and/or certification in geriatric and dementia care is considered a strong asset;
- First Aid and CPR certification is also an asset;
- Possession of, or ability obtain a recent criminal record check;
- Physically able to lift 50-70 kgs;
- Knowledge of Portuguese is an asset but is not required; and
- Professional references will be required.
